WHEN John Caligari shut the door on a 36-year Army career , he spent more than four months relaxing , travelling and thinking about what he might do next . It might seem a long time to be “ navel-gazing ” but he was just implementing basic training . “ This is my new battlefield ... prepare the battlefield ,” he said . While he and wife Narelle had time together to travel , he conducted a self-assessment as thorough and comprehensive as any military operation . “ I have gone through my personal values and beliefs to find what it is that makes me happy , what it is that I really want ,” he said . “ You don ’ t really do that in the Army because every two years you get a new job , a new challenge , and you move , and learn something new . “ I love learning - it ’ s why I joined - and that ’ s the life , every two years , you learn something new .” After his introspection , he came up with three overlapping circles representing the new interests in his life .
