Kayla sets her sights on summer school in Germany
K
AYLA Singleton is a Defence
kid on a mission... she’s been invited to
an exclusive summer school in Germany,
and she needs $3500 to get there.
She is one of only 27 international
Year 12 students asked to attend
the Heidelberg International
Science Summer School in July.
She will be one of three Australians
rubbing shoulders with students
from all over the world.
The opportunity she believes is a once-
in-a-lifetime chance to network with the
world’s top next-generation scientists
was off ered to her after she attended
the Rotary National Youth Science
Forum at the Australian National
University in Canberra in January.
“I hope to meet lots of people
while I am there,” Kayla, a Kirwan
State High School student, said.
“These are the people - from all these
countries - that I might be working with
in the future, it’s a great opportunity.”
Kayla was presented with a certifi cate
of achievement for being selected
to participate in the two science
camps and CO 3CSR LTCOL Ed
Wunsch and RSM 3CSR WO1
Craig Oldham did the honours.
LTCOL Wunsch, who leads
the regiment containing the
Brigade’s technical gurus, told
Kayla the Regiment would
support her fundraising eff orts.
Kirwan State High School, with
the biggest Defence student
population in Townsville, was
adopted by 3CSR this year.
The Heidelberg Summer School
runs from July 23 to August 19 and,
after school hours, Kayla said there
would be time to learn about the
city, and the universities and research
institutions for which it is famous.

To try to learn as much of the culture
as possible, Kayla is doing a crash-
course in German on her phone.
“I know there are bicycle
tours of the city... that sounds
interesting,” Kayla said.
At the same time, she is a little
daunted - it is the fi rst time she will
have been out of Australia, other
than a family trip to New Zealand.
And, other than the two Australians,
she will have nobody to lean on
while she is away from home.
She hopes to study medicine - possibly
at Universities of Queensland, Sydney
or Melbourne - beginning next year.
She has already dipped a toe in the
water, spending work experience
time in a JCU medical research
unit working on a drug to stabilise
trauma victims and extend their
survivability for up to six hours.
It’s the sort of science that excites her.
“I might end up as a doctor
practicing medicine, but I am
hoping to be able to combine clinical
research with that,” she said.
Kayla’s mother LT Maree Singleton
2CHC and stepfather MAJ Craig
Lindsay 3CSSB are both in the Army.
