ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018 | 29 Plan for Palm Island tourism AN $8,500 grant supported the Manbarra Traditional Owner group to develop its plan for a tourism business showcasing the beautiful North East Bay on Palm Island. Group members filmed and produced a video, and captured important hi story and traditional ecological knowledge about the island. This history and cultural heritage will be an important part of the venture, which aims to give visitors a taste of the traditional Aboriginal way of life. “We want to show visitors how the old people used to live, sleeping under the stars,” Manbarra Elder Uncle Walter Palm Island said. “How they used to hunt and how they used to know where to find water, find bush tucker, and live off the land and sea. Thank you, NQ Dry Tropics. You have opened up the doors for me and for Traditional Owners to revive understanding of our country. – Uncle Walter Palm Island, Manbarra Elder “We have a wealth of knowledge to share. For us, it’s about independence and self-determination.” ENGAGING WITH TRADITIONAL OWNERS
