GETTING OUR “YOUTH” ON
The Prevention Day Launch
NPW 2017 began at the closing plenary for SAMHSA’s Prevention Day, which was held at the CADCA
Forum in February 2017. Joined by more than 800 prevention experts and prevention coalition
leaders, SAMHSA revealed the NPW 2017 theme, the prevention challenge, and the latest resources
communities could use to plan their NPW activities and prevention actions.
A lively conclusion to the annual Prevention Day conference, the NPW launch event focused on
youth—who also led the event. Hosted by local college behavioral health advocates and students from
The George Washington University and Howard University, and featured a performance by FoolProof—
an improvisational theatre troupe composed of teenage prevention advocates from Carroll County,
Maryland—the event reinforced to attendees the essential role that youth play in prevention and the
need to strengthen youth voices in community discussions and actions regarding prevention.
