Surviving the Holidays
By Kathleen Kennedy , Government Relations Manager
It ’ s the most wonderful time of the year … isn ’ t it ?
The holidays can be a joyful time to spend with our family and friends , but it can also be overwhelming and anxiety inducing . Between all of shopping , cooking and traveling , family conflict and difficult relatives can make the holidays seem a little less wonderful .
To make the best of the season , follow these tips to make your holiday as stress-free as possible :
1 ) Plan ahead : Knowing what to expect and how to respond can be a powerful weapon in combating stressful experiences . Identify potential interactions that may cause you stress and be prepared with how to respond to help reduce anxiety .
2 ) Find your allies : If dealing with certain individuals causes you stress , find somebody you do usually get along with and stick with them .
3 ) Set boundaries : Try to avoid sensitive topics that are bound to incite arguments or make people uncomfortable . If something does come up , try to tune out of the conversation or change the subject . But remember to you can always excuse yourself if things are unsafe .
4 ) Be mindful of your consumption : Alcohol is a depressant that can worsen anxiety and depression symptoms and lower your inhibitions , possibly leading you to say or do things you may later regret .
5 ) Find your joy : Anxiety can be greatly reduced when we focus on things that we enjoy and value . Even small things like wearing your favorite sweater or your favorite holiday dessert can help increase mood .
6 ) Prioritize self-care : Taking care of yourself physically and mentally will help manage stress . Things like practicing mindfulness , taking deep breaths or getting out for some exercise can help .
The holidays can be a stressful time , but they don ’ t have to be . They can be enjoyable times that we spend with our family and friends . However you feel about the holiday season , remember to take care of yourself and your mental health by maintaining healthy habits and accepting whatever feelings may come up .
