CLINICOPATHOLOGIC REVIEW : A Case of Palatal Pigmentation
CONCLUSION
In conclusion , there are a variety of conditions that can lead to oral mucosal discoloration . Our discussion includes some of the more common etiologies linked to intraoral pigmentation . Clinicians should have a good understanding of the various causes of intraoral pigmentation in order to determine the diagnosis ( or differential diagnosis ) and an appropriate management approach . Any intraoral pigmented lesion should be examined carefully in the context of the patient ’ s social , medical , dental , and medication histories .
When discoloration presents as a symmetric , darkly pigmented , grayish-black lesion of the palate , a drug-related pigmentation should be considered and imatinib therapy is one medication that may cause such a pattern of palatal pigmentation . While this diagnosis can frequently be made based on the clinical presentation and patient history alone , a biopsy should be considered if there is any suspicion of melanoma .
