Maher, RPh, DDS, MS 2 CE credits recommended for dentists and hygienists The presentation will explore pharmaceutical agents used for pain control in dentistry. The lecture will include the purpose for each medicinal agent in the local anesthetic cartridge and possible drug-drug interactions with these agents and antidepressants. Drug interactions, proper use, abuse and precautionary measures necessary before and during nitrous oxide administration also will be explored. And, alternate treatment modalities available to the dental practitioner will be presented. Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to: • Review the contents of the local anesthetic cartridge and describe precautionary measures prior to and during local anesthetic (injectable and topical) administration. • Identify significant drug-drug interactions involving local anesthetics and tricyclic antidepressants. • Understand the serious abuse potential of nitrous oxide and importance of proper in-office dispensing and administration. • Review alternative treatment modalities specific to anesthetic administration available to dentists. About the Speaker William P. Maher, RPh, DDS, MS Dr. William Maher is an ABE certified Endodontist and a licensed Pharmacist. He has held a Michigan license to practice pharmacy for more than forty-three years and dentistry for thirty-six. He taught Endodontics full-time at the University of Detroit Mercy for nine years with a special interest in the relationship between pharmacology and dental care. In 2015, Dr. Maher was appointed to the Michigan Board of Dentistry where he served on the disciplinary subcommittee, allegations committee, rules committee, ad hoc committee on anesthesia and chaired the continuing education committee.
