Wynn, PhD 2 CE credits recommended for dentists, hygienists and dental assistants This lecture will provide an overview of the medical marijuana industry and discuss the federal and individual state standards. Common medical conditions treated with medical marijuana will be reviewed along with the short and long-term effects of marijuana use and the dental considerations of treating a patient who uses marijuana. Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to: • List the general requirements for marijuana growers, processors, dispensers and providers. • List the primary adverse effects of marijuana after short term and long term use. • Describe the federal standards versus individual state standards for medical use of marijuana. • Explain the mitigation of opioid prescribing with the increase in medical marijuana use. • Name the accepted medical conditions for marijuana use according to the National Academy of Sciences. • Describe any clinical problems with a marijuana user undergoing dental treatment. About the Speaker Richard L. Wynn, PhD Dr. Wynn is Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Maryland Dental School in Baltimore. He is the lead author and chief editor of Drug Information Handbook for Dentistry, now in its 24th edition, published by LexiComp, Inc. His chief interest is in teaching pharmacology to dental and dental hygiene students and keeping dental professionals informed of current and new drug information relative to dental practice.
