Shanti, DMD, MD 8:00 a.m. – Noon Oral Cancer: Screening and Current Management Strategies Presented by Dr. Rabie Shanti Course is 4 hours of continuing education credit appropriate for dentists, hygienists and assistants. Fee includes full breakfast. This lecture will provide an update on contemporary management strategies for oral cancer with an emphasis on a multidisciplinary approach. As a result of attending this lecture, participants should be able to: • Update his/her knowledge on the importance of the dental community in the early diagnosis of cancers of the oral cavity, which will improve patient survival. • Discuss predictive and prognostic information for oral cancer. • Appreciate contemporary state-of-the-art multidisciplinary treatment strategies. • Discuss modern surgical techniques that allow for optimal tumor control with excellent functional and aesthetic outcomes. Currently, Dr. Shanti is an assistant professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the Department of Otorhinolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. He obtained his dental degree from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and his medical degree from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. Dr. Shanti completed an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency at University Hospital/Rutgers University in Newark, NJ, and a twoyear clinical fellowship in Head and Neck Oncology, Microvascular Reconstruction and Transoral Robotic Surgery at Louisiana State University Health Sciences. He also completed a two-year research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Shanti also is involved in both clinical and translational research efforts that aim to enhance the efficacy of current treatment paradigms, as well as in the development of innovative treatment strategies for patients with benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck.
