Max McTaggart, a well-respected Australian horseman, purchased Elgrando as a rising two-year-old from Sam Hordern Jnr and Jack Reilly at HR Run in Penrith, NSW. Max and Elgrando were a formidable team for many years at rodeos, cutting competitions and Quarter Horse shows, competing in every aspect of the western horse industry. Elgrando was the first induction into the NCHA’s Heritage Horses Hall of Fame in 1991, in recognition of his contribution to the history and sport of cutting. In 1998 he was also inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame. Shortly after the arrival of the first American Quarter Horses, the Hordern family founded Yulgilbar Quarter Horse Stud, the name derived from Yulgilbar Station, their heritage-listed family property on the Clarence River near Grafton, NSW.
