“ Hard ” and “ Soft ” Dollars :

What ’ s the Difference ?

When planning to make a contribution to PADPAC , it is important to understand the type of contribution you are making . Every contribution received is placed in one of two categories : hard or soft dollars .
Hard dollars are dollars contributed via personal check or personal credit card . Hard dollar contributions can be used to contribute directly to a candidate ’ s campaign committees . Hard dollars directly support the re-election efforts of legislators who are in a position of leadership and / or support dentistry ’ s goals .
If you make a contribution using a corporate check or corporate credit card , the funds are considered soft dollars and can only be used for non-candidate specific purposes such as hosting an event for a legislator , political education , public outreach , planning an event in your district , member advocacy , or PADPAC membership support .
As a reminder , PDA sends $ 40 out of every $ 120 hard dollar contribution to the American Dental Association ’ s Political Action Committee ( ADPAC ). Also , we send a lump sum of soft dollars to ADPAC each year .
