5th Grade Travels to The Franklin Institute
What better way to learn lessons of science , engineering and technology than getting right in the middle of a hands-on experience at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia . That is just what Mrs . Mitchell and Mrs . Karstetter ’ s 5th grade classes did .
Once the 5th graders arrived they started the day off with a planetarium experience called " To Space and Back ." The Fels Planetarium is 60 feet in diameter and provides an amazing show about space and the universe which helped us understand how space exploration impacts the way we live here on Earth . They also spent time exploring exhibits such as Wondrous Space , Mazes and Brain Games , Your Brain , Sir Issac ' s Loft , and Amazing Machines .
The Sports Zone provided the students with an opportunity to see how sports connect the human body to science . By testing their skills at pitching , jumping , running and getting out some energy they were able to grasp the concepts of health , material science , mechanics and motion . The Sportz Zone also taught them about fitness and nutrition , plus how to safely play to their bodies ability .
“ My students loved viewing the Benjamin Franklin statue , learning about how neurons work in our brains in the " Your Brain " exhibit by following the pathways the brain takes to control functions throughout the body ” explained Mrs . Karstetter . “ The planetarium was a big hit , they really enjoyed taking a journey through the cosmos when they explored the immersive , multisensory " Wonderous Space " exhibit , they also said one of their favorite parts of our trip was being able to interact with all of the inventions in Sir Isaac ' s Loft .“
The teachers enjoyed being able to take the students on this journey to Philadelphia . It ’ s been many years since they have done such an exciting adventure . The staff and administration hope to be able to continue this trip for each new 5th grade class that they have .
