- Have a Healthier Thanksgiving -
• Start preparing now ! Ramp up your exercise routine ( or start one if you haven ' t already ). Increase your steps , lengthen your walks , or take an extra yoga class to create a calorie deficit , prior to binging on your favorite foods at the Thanksgiving table !
• Don ' t skip breakfast the morning of Thanksgiving . You may think you ' re saving calories , but eating a small , well-planned meal in the morning will actually help you be more discriminating in your food choices later in the day . Go for a protein and fiber-filled meal so you are not starving when you sit down to eat the holiday meal .
• It ' s amazing how many calories you can save by reducing the fat and sugar in your recipes . Try subbing fat-free chicken broth to baste the turkey or make the gravy . Use fruit purees instead of oil in your baked goods , or use plain yogurt or fat-free sour cream in mashed potatoes , green bean casseroles , or snack dips . Most people won ' t even notice a difference , but your scale will !
• Savor your meal slowly . Focus on conversation with your friends and family . Pause in between bites ... take your time . Eating slowly and really tasting and enjoying your food will lessen your desire to get yourself second helpings . Have a salad before the main entree to fill yourself with water and fiber .
• Drink in moderation . Calories from alcohol really add up . A glass of wine or wine spritzer is a good choice .
• Choose your calories wisely . Fill your plate with holiday favorites you don ' t eat very often , rather than food you eat regularly throughout the meal . You ' ll feel less guilty and more satisfied .
• Keep your portions reasonable . You may want to overindulge because Thanksgiving only comes around once a year , but Christmas is on the way , too , and year after year , many people pack on at least a pound over the holidays - and keep it on permanently . If not pigging out this year makes you feel a little deprived , take a moment to look around the table and remember what ' s really so special about Thanksgiving . Rather than food , focus on your wonderful family and friends - gathered together , in person - especially after the past year and a half . That ' s the real main event ! That quality time is much more fulfilling than food !
