A Busy First Semester
The first semester of the 2023 / 24 Lock Haven University school year has been busy - and successful . Since reopening in mid-August , the school , in year two since Commonwealth University became a reality , successfully added additional students . The new university as a whole has increased the first year undergrad population by ten percent ; and the graduate student population by twenty-five percent .
These numbers mean that more and more Pennsylvania residents ( and , to a lesser extent , students from as far away as Oregon , Washington , and Arizona ) have taken advantage of the excellent educational opportunities at Commonwealth University , provided at a lower cost . With a fully revised academic curriculum soon to be initiated , and real-life skills training available , Commonwealth University is poised to continue to add to the student body going forward .
This interest was confirmed by the huge turnout for the first LHU open house of the school year , held Saturday , October 14th .
Prospective students heard from the admissions team , faculty , and most importantly , current students . Discussions centered on academic majors and departments , financial aid and scholarships . Student life , including housing , dining , and socia l life were also topics of interest . And you can be sure the wide-ranging discussion included the amazing resurrection of the football team , in the midst of their best season in a generation .
Coach Dan Mulrooney used the transfer portal to attract talent from across the country - third and fourth level recruits to other schools who were not seeing playing time . Undergrad and grad students from Stony Brook , Wagner , Buffalo , Monmouth - even Penn State and Alabama - took advantage of the opportunity to come together and work toward creating a new culture .
Mission accomplished - this Bald Eagle team doesn ' t back away , no matter who the competition is . Their ability to stay close to teams , who in past years would lead by four touchdowns at halftime , has led to several come from behind wins . Mulrooney and his talented staff deserve credit - but it ' s the players belief in what they are capable of that makes this a team to remember .
And Lock Haven University sports will continue to succeed throughout the winter - both the men ' s and women ' s basketball teams are loaded with talent , and both wrestling teams are goaing to be nationally ranked to start the season . The excitement continues at Lock Haven University !
