Breed All About It!
Spotlight on: The Jack Russell Terrier
Description: This small but spunky breed is mostly white, with brown, tan, and / or black markings. Often referred to as the JRT, its short coat can be smooth or rough.
Temperament: Jack Russell Terriers are one of the most energetic, determined, and intense of all breeds. As such, they are a better fit for experienced dog owners. JRTs are extremely smart, fearless, and energetic, and can be a fun-loving family companion. Their intelligence makes them very easy to train and they learn very quickly. The problem is convincing them to do what you just trained them to, as they can be assertive and head strong. Friendly and sociable with people, extra care must be taken with other animals. Many Jack Russell Terriers are dominant or aggressive toward other dogs. Two Jack Russells should not be left alone together – one may attack the other over something as minor as the possession of a toy. Bred to hunt, most JRTs also have a strong prey drive and will chase and seize small creatures. A sedate lifestyle is not suitable for Jack Russell Terriers. They require full participation in family activities and vigorous daily play sessions. Too little exercise and mental stimulation can quickly lead to boredom and destructive behaviors. JRTs are extremely alert and are fond of barking, which make them good watchdogs.
Average Height / Weight: About 10- 15 inches tall, and approximately 13- 17 pounds.
Health Issues: JRTs are a hearty, healthy breed and usually have a long life span. However, they can be prone to serious eye diseases, such as lens luxation, glaucoma, and cataracts. They may also be susceptible to deafness, ataxia, heart disease, epilepsy, and patellar luxation.
Exercise: Jack Russell Terriers require a major commitment in terms of exercise, mental stimulation, and training. They are athletic, crave activity, and should get at least an hour of exercise daily. A fenced in yard is almost imperative to let your JRT run off its energy. Be aware, though- despite its small size, this breed can jump up to five feet high. They are also notorious diggers, so it ' s important to make sure your fence will contain your dog. Jack Russells excel at activities, such as agility, flyball, and obedience training.
Life Expectancy: 13- 18 years.
Grooming: The Jack Russell ' s short coat is easy to maintain. They do shed quite a bit, though, so a frequent brushing is recommended.
