Two essential figures of history are unquestionably Winston Churchill and George Washington. These men were the right individuals at the right time. Their lives, accomplishments and impact on events were monumental. In“ Hero of the Empire” by Candice Millard, we travel with a 25-year-old Churchill, whose actions of reporting and fighting an obscure war a continent away was for the purpose of achieving fame and glory. He was so self-assured of his legacy and ambition that he was convinced he would not only survive enormous danger and evade near-certain death but emerge as a hero. And he did, enabling his climb to the heights of British leadership that he sought.
George Washington is unquestionably the father of our country. His unmatched leadership skills were the difference in America prevailing against the world’ s most formidable military power. There were several notable victories in the Revolutionary War that turned the tide for America to emerge as an independent nation. The Battle of Trenton, where Washington led his troops across the Delaware River, and the Battle of Saratoga, where he led a force in Pennsylvania, while sending reinforcements to that New York battlefront. Add to that the Siege of Yorktown, which ended the war. Washington did not wilt. History was made. His genius was not as a battlefield commander, but as a leader of men, in which he excelled like few others.
“ Hero of the Empire” was our book in October.“ In the Hurricane’ s Eye,” by Nathaniel Philbrick is our November read. It focuses on the leader, first president, and event that gave birth to our nation. The discussion will be in the fireplace room of the clubhouse at 1:30 p. m. on Nov. 17. The book and our discussion is timed to coincide with Ken Burns’ decade-in-the-making of his latest documentary film,“ The American Revolution,” premiering on Nov. 16. We welcome new members to join us in what is sure to be an informative book group discussion.
