A Note From The Editor :

My facebook feed is full of pets ... my pets , friends ' pets , cute pets , homeless pets , lost pets , found pets . Many times the posts make me smile ; too often , they make me cry . It ' s difficult to see so many posts from people who spend their time , their resources , sometimes their entire lives trying to make things better for pets that are victims of irresponsible or abusive people . Rescues are tapped out , emotionally , physically , and financially . So many say their intakes are closed , but inevitably , another pet in need comes along , and they can ' t turn them away .
A recent post by a woman named Aimee Brennan showed dozens of food bowls lined up in a hallway outside pet shelter cages . The text read : " Whenever you feel guilty about not giving your dog the best life , whenever you think about surrendering your dog because ' you can ' t give them the life they deserve ,' just look at this picture of kennel manager Trevor Denham and the team at The City of Mobile Animal Services getting ready for dinner time . You can see one dog with his paw out waiting for his food . For these dogs locked in their kennels , this is the highlight of their day . They have absolutely nothing . Your dog would much prefer being on your sofa waiting for you to come home , rather than being stuck in there . I promise you are doing just fine . Keep them home where they belong ."
Much of the time , people don ' t give dogs enough credit for the amazing capabilities they possess . But sometimes , we personify them , and that can be even more damaging . We project our own feelings that lead to suppositions like the one above - " I can ' t give them the life they deserve " - that simply aren ' t true . Dogs sleep up to fourteen hours a day , cats even more . If you ' re feeling guilty about leaving them alone while you ' re at work , keep that in mind ! Please don ' t let that be a reason why you bring your dog or cat to a shelter or rescue . Your pet appreciates any time you can give them and would much prefer a loving home , compared to the despair of living in a lonely cage wondering where you are and when you ' re coming back for them .
