Question : What fall allergies dogs are susceptible to and what can we do to alleviate the symptoms ?
Answer : As a groomer , I see dogs with allergies all year round . But in the fall , allergy symptoms seem more prevalent . Your dog can be allergic to pollen , dust , leaves , grass , or other substances that are more common in the fall . Many plants die in the fall , and wind , moisture , and cooler temperatures stir up irritants . In addition , along with fall comes mold , which can affect your pet whether he is allergic or not . There are no specific fall allergies , but they tend to surface with seasonal changes . Allergic symptoms , which are cyclical and repeatedly surface at the same time each year , are referred to as inhalant allergies or atopy , as opposed to food allergies . Dogs can develop allergies to different stimulants as they age . It can vary from year to year , as well . The only way to effectively diagnose them is to do intradermal skin testing performed by a board certified veterinary dermatologist , who will then prescribe allergy injections based on test results . Signs of inhalant allergies are most often exhibited with the following symptoms :
• Scratching • Hair loss • Reddened skin • Itchy red eyes • Excessive paw licking • Ear infections
Keep bedding clean and dry , wash paws , and groom regularly . Supplements like NU-Vet and Omega 3 Fatty Acids are helpful , as well as bathing your pet with a mild shampoo to keep his or her skin and hair clean of pollution . Contact your veterinarian if symptoms persist .
