2024 ASCE-NH / VT Joint Meeting

On a freezing cold November evening , members of the American Society of Civil Engineers ( ASCE ) from both the New Hampshire and Vermont Sections gathered for a joint meeting at the Hotel Coolidge in White River Junction , VT , that was surely worth the chilly commute . Despite the long distances most had to travel ( to meet as close to “ half-way ” as possible ), the warm / cozy atmosphere , excellent food , and engaging presentation made it a memorable night for everyone .
The event kicked off with an assortment of cheese and crackers , accompanied by a selection of fine beers and wines which everyone greatly enjoyed . As attendees settled in , dinner was served , and the feast did not disappoint . Highlights included savory chicken marsala , tender London broil , creamy mashed potatoes , pasta primavera , mixed vegetables , and a fresh garden salad to start everything off . For dessert , a sweet and satisfying treat wrapped up the meal , leaving everyone fully prepared for the upcoming presentation .
The main event of the evening was a fantastic presentation by Steven Roberge , Extension Forestry Specialist & Professor at the UNH Cooperative Extension . His talk , " Forest Carbon 101 : Climate Change , Forest Carbon Science , Management , and Carbon Markets ," covered a broad range of important topics impacting our environment today . He delved into the science behind forest carbon , discussing how forests play a pivotal role in storing and sequestering carbon to help mitigate climate change . Steven also touched on the intricacies of forest management and the emerging carbon markets that are shaping our approach to forest sustainability .
Attendees were captivated by the depth of knowledge shared , particularly regarding the importance of forests in the Northeast United States , where diverse forest ecosystems provide a multitude of environmental , economic , and social benefits . Steven ’ s presentation educated attendees and encouraged them to think critically about how they can contribute to these efforts in their professional practices and communities .
