The Arts Society Nerja has the pleasure to invite you to two lectures at the Centro Cultural , Calle Granada , Nerja .

Tuesday , 9 November at 18.00 , a lecture on Barcelona , “ Barcelona 1900 : Wealth , Poverty and Violence in Society and Superb Creativity in Art ”. Between 1880 and 1910 , Barcelona underwent an impressive transformation with revolutionary city development , urban architecture by Antoni Gaudi , and the creation of elegant interiors in the ’ modernista ’ style ( pictured left ), Barcelona ’ s version of Art Nouveau . The lecturer Helen Sijsling is the chair of the Arts Society Nerja . She has an MA English Literature from the universities in Leyden and Oxford . In her lecture , Helen Sijsling will speak about the blossoming of art and culture but also how this went hand-in-hand with far reaching industrialization and serious political and social tensions .

Tuesday , 23 November at 18.00 , a lecture on Charles Dickens , ” A Dickens of a Christmas and God Bless Us Everyone ”. It has been said that Dickens ’ invented ’ Christmas . Whatever the case , Dickens revived Christmas traditions with plum pudding , turkey , games , dancing and family cheer . In his master piece ” A Christmas Carol ” he immortalises the spirit of Christmas cheer . In his lecture , Bertie Pearce will reveal a Dickensian Christmas with readings , biographical details and conjuring tricks . Bertie Pearce has a background in theatre , but he is also appreciated as a lecturer . For medical reasons he cannot be in Nerja personally , but his lecture will be streamed ’ live ’ to the Centro Cultural .
