Nerja appeals

Water cuts for farmers

Nerja has made another appeal to the Ministry of Ecological Transitions to cancel its demand for € 7 million from the town to help pay for its new water treatment plant , presently in its testing phase . Mayor José Alberto Armijo said it was “ unfair ” that no town except Nerja had been asked to make such a payment . He added that the “ years of delay ” in providing the plant had already prejudiced local residents .
Nerja footpath
Work is expected to start this month on a footpath between Nerja ’ s La Caletilla beach , immediately west of the Balcón de Europa , and El Salón beach . The Town recently contracted Actua Infraestructuras SL to carry out the work with a budget of almost € 161,000 . It will eventually form part of the Senda Litoral ( Coastal Footpath ) which will run 180 kilometres from Nerja to Manilva .
New officers
Six new police officers , presently under training , will join the local force in Torrox in the New Year . On their visit to the town last month , the new recruits met mayor Oscár Medina and some of the 25 officers they will be joining . Sr Medina said he would keep working until he reached his goal of having 50 officers on the force .
Emergency return
A flight from Málaga to Hamburg made an emergency return to Málaga on October 5 after reporting an hydraulic failure . When it touched down , the Eurowings aircraft blocked the main runway until being towed clear . During that time , the second runway was opened , although with restrictions , allowing five other flights to take off with only minimal delays .
Green Line
Frigiliana has launched the Linea Verde ( Green Line ) for residents to report municipal problems directly to the town hall . Mobile phone users can download the Linea Verde app while internet users can go to lineaverdefrigiliana . es . There is also a premium rate ( 7 cents a minute ) phone line - 902 193 768 - which is open from 8.00am to 5.00pm .
Farmers in the Axarquía received the news they did not want to hear last month . In the middle of October , the regional government cut water supplies for crop irrigation from La Viñuela reservoir by a third .
The Junta de Andalucía is reported to have made the cutback following the water level in the reservoir falling to under 21 per cent of its total capacity . Growers have had their supplies slashed with water for almost 6,300 hectares of mangos , avocados and other produce cut from 3,000 to 2,000 cubic metres per hectare , the lowest for around 30 years .
Officials said the move was made to ensure water supplies for human consumption in the coming months , although drinking water supplies to 14 municipalities has also been reduced .
However , the regional government is
Motor home and caravan owners expressed their anger with Nerja and Torre del Mar last month with a protest march between the two towns . Torre del Mar does not allow overnight stays by such vehicles while Nerja bans parking altogether .
According to the The Estatal Karavaning organisation , both towns are unpopular with owners after imposing “ restrictive by-laws ” which “ discriminate ” against their vehicles . They also claim that the rules , “ contradict the guidelines set by the Directorate-General for Traffic ( DGT ) for local authorities to regulate their parking spaces .”
Nerja launched a fight against motor homes in 2019 after the Town Hall received complaints about the number of such vehicles on El Playzo beach , at the town ’ s western extreme . A campaign the following spring resulted in many owners being fined and presently investing € 5.4 million to deal with the drought in the Axarquía . Early next year , between three and four hectometres of water is expected to come on line from new wells on the Chillar River near Nerja . In addition , two hectometres will be sent from the Guadalhorce-Limonero reservoir system , while plans to use recycled water from Vélez-Málaga , Rincón de Victoria and Torrox have been accelerated with an investment of € 1.8 million from the regional government . Looking further ahead the Málaga Water Highway is now 60 per cent complete and will allow the province of Málaga to share water resources with the Campo de Gibraltar .
Meanwhile , emergency work to clear tunnels and dams close to the reservoir has been underway . Accumulated sand is being removed to enable the easier passage of fresh rainwater into the main pool .

Motor home owners protest warning signs appearing through the town .

Estatal Karavaning claims it has been trying to open discussions with both Nerja and Torre del Mar Town Halls for more than a year , but had been receiving “ evasive or inconclusive answers .” Last month ’ s protest followed as a result , with the warning that “ other pressure measures ” would follow .
Nerja Town Hall said that one of the electoral commitments made by the present Partido Popular administration was to accommodate motor homes , and that talks with a third party have been underway to provide parking for these vehicles .
