This well-worn quote attributed to Franklin adorns the walls of bars , pubs and , I am sure , quite a few dorm rooms , in some form or another as a tribute to America ’ s most popular adult beverage .
I guess the logic is to infer an indirect endorsement from one of our most respected founding fathers who was also , allegedly , an enthusiastic libationist .
Jamie Coelho , one of our senior editors , has researched the flourishing local beer scene in our “ Ultimate Guide to Local Beer .” A tip of the glass also goes to special editions editor Kait Murray , editorial assistant Edelinda Baptista and well-known local cerevisaphile Lou Papineau for their contributions . For beer enthusiasts and aspiring wannabes , this guide covers the well-publicized and little-known gems that are populating the Ocean State ’ s hops scene .
The team not only gives you the 411 on locations and hours but also provides insight on what might await your beer-quaffing tastebuds at each . Have a hankering for sipping an IPA in the sun ? This guide ’ s got the download on outdoor seating , family friendliness and even where you can go to share a pint with your pooch .
The Beer Summit , orchestrated by President Obama in 2009 , speaks to what a great equalizer sharing a brew is often expected to be . After a racially charged confrontation between Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr . and Cambridge , Massachusetts , Police Sergeant James Crowley , they were invited to the White House to discuss what was described as a teachable moment on the topic of race relations over what else ? A beer .
The topics of diversity , inclusion and equality are on the minds of many of us these days and efforts to work towards them are prevalent everywhere we look . We are proud to add our own addition to that dialogue with our first annual Christiana Carteaux Bannister Awards , presented in partnership with the Rhode Island Foundation . This first class of award recipients was selected from scores of nominees received . Their stories — who they are , what they have done , why they were selected — are also in this issue , with a nod to senior editor Casey Nilsson , who shepherded this feature and the award process . We intend this year ’ s class to become next year ’ s judges to perpetuate the concept and pay it forward .
To the Rhode ahead . – J . J . P .
