Jamestown resident Brittany Semco photographed the winners for RIM ’ s annual Tech Ten awards . Along with her degree in graphic design and public relations , she is a licensed drone photographer and describes her photographic style as having a documentary quality with a natural aesthetic . “ I ’ ve been photographing life , places and people since I was twelve , when I received my first camera ,” she says . “ Creating beautiful , meaningful images is my passion and I hope that is conveyed in my work .”
John Taraborelli has never been particularly interested in birds , but he is fascinated by people and the quirky subcultures they sometimes inhabit . That ’ s how he came to write “ A Very Big Year ,” on the local birding community and its ( not-so ) competitive race for the most birds spotted in a year . Though it didn ’ t inspire him to take up a new hobby , he did learn to appreciate why some sandpipers are a bigger deal than others .

Illustrator John Rego is inspired by the absurdities of the human and natural world , often juxtaposing the two . Both are on display in his illustration for this month ’ s birding story . Rego , who ’ s a Warren native , primarily works in acrylics . “ My style is inspired by pop-surrealism , romanticism and nineteenth-century scientific illustration ,” he says . “ I am a Canada goose enthusiast and have been rumored to eat two pounds of grapes in one sitting .”
