Improve Onboarding ... ( Continued from page 4 ) 4

How do you hope your project might unfold in the months and years ahead and what impact do you hope it will have on the field at large ?
Overall , my wishes for this project is to help change the culture at the roots of the organization , and for our employees to want to stay long term . Over the next several months , I want to see communication improve - specifically between all managers and employees . I plan on regularly attending staff meetings ultimately with all managers and their teams , but will begin with the nursing department . The goal is to help them with breaking down barriers and working through some of the challenges occurring . I want teams to develop trust and transparency with each other and understand that it is okay to have difficult conversations in a respectful , non-defensive way in order to make headway and progress with challenges . Additionally , I hope to see team members begin to hold each other accountable , and develop more camaraderie among one another . With these changes , I feel like employees will begin to feel more invested and will start to see increased positive outcomes . By ultimately retaining our staff and making them feel engaged and valued , the negative financial impact that we experience due to having to continually recruit and onboard should stabilize and possible even reduce . I believe that our employee satisfaction will increase and St . Ann ’ s will become the employer of choice for our area .

How has the action learning process in the context of the Leadership Academy experience contributed to your growth as a leader ?
The skills I gained through the Leadership Academy helped to bring my project to fruition . The Academy has helped me gain the confidence that I was lacking . I was always afraid of making a mistake , or not being an expert in certain areas . Now I realize that failing forward is okay as long as I learned from the experience . I have also realized that by being comfortable to fail forward , it empowers others to do the same . I want St . Ann ’ s to have a learning culture , so we continue to adapt to the ever changing environment .
I identified concepts that could be applied to my ALP throughout the Academy . Specifically after reading the book Switch , I was able to develop a process that would effectively create change by influencing both the hearts and minds of employees . When meeting with employees and listening to their challenges , I practice the exercise of examining the situation and helping to shape the path to deliver the desired outcome . As I work with individual teams , I also plan to incorporate the concept of The Power of Full Engagement and empowering teams to create practices that are most effective for them , while being able to measure their success and accountable for results . Lastly , I have recognized the importance of getting on the balcony and gaining that high level perspective . It is critical to look at the big picture from different points of view to ensure the most effective decision is being made .
