2019 National ASCE Convention
Every fall the ASCE Annual Convention provides the
opportunity to meet with a cross section of leaders
from the public‐sector, the consulting engineering
sector, academia, and colleagues from around the
world, not only through learning sessions, but also
through networking events, lunches, dinners and
more that take place throughout the event. The
Society’s premier membership event took place in
Miami, Florida this year, allowing NH Board of
Director members Nick Golon, PE and Brenton
Cole, PE the opportunity to experience the
conventions integrated, multi‐cultural, technical,
and educational components. Topics covered
included the state of the industry/profession,
professional
development,
multidisciplinary
technical, history & heritage, and much more.
The days were long and packed with concurrent
sessions ranging in topics. While Nick attended
“Engineering in a Post Volcanic Eruption
Environment” which highlighted the emergency
response to the eruption of Guatemala’s Volcano
Fuego, he learned a valuable lesson from Speaker
Michael Paddock, PE, PS and Chief Engineer with
Engineers without Boarders. If you see a sign that
looks like this…
The Convention opened with Alex McDowell
guiding the crowd through the Floating City digital
concept, the first installment in ASCE’s Future
World Vision, outlining its expected evolution over
the next 50‐years. The Floating City was also
highlighted at the ASCE Future World Vision
interactive booth, an immersive experience
constructed in a real‐time 4‐D computer simulation
model. Created using Future World Vision's
combination of future‐scenario forecasting and
deeply researched hard data, The Floating City put
attendee’s decades into the future to start creating
tomorrow's
solutions
today.
