November is
National Healthy
Skin Month.
Athletes, such as
golfers, spend many
hours in the mid-day
sun, practicing or
competing.
It is so important, especially for our junior
golfers, to learn at a young age how to
properly protect our skin and reduce the risk
of developing skin cancer in the future.
We may get advice from friends or family on
what is the best regimen or sunscreen, but
board-certified dermatologists are the
experts. They can diagnose more than 3,000
skin, hair and nail diseases — including
skin cancer, acne, eczema and psoriasis —
and provide effective medical and surgical
treatment.
As a young person, I never took care of my
skin the way I should.
Then nearly 7 years ago, when I had a mole
removed that I thought was nothing, I got
the phone call that said it was basal-cell
carcinoma. I had to have a procedure to
surgically remove it. After a few stitches and
a small scar that remains, I am glad that
something urged me to have it checked and
now I go in every 6 months for screening.
So, during National Healthy Skin Month take
a few minutes to learn some tips on how
you can take care of your skin as you play
on the course or even ride and watch your
little ones play.
