COLEBROOK GIRLS
BLANKED IN FINALS
The Colebrook Academy girls
soccer team will be hanging a
banner on the wall this winter
for the first time in years. The
sixth-seeded lady Mohawks were
almost able to pull off the “Cinderella story” upset, but fell
short last Sunday to unbeaten
Sunapee High School on the
artificial turf in Laconia.
Sunapee scored just a mere 30
seconds into the contest, and
never looked back. The Colebrook defense was able to tighten
up after, however, allowing just
one more goal before halftime.
Four minutes after Sunapee’s
first tally, Mackenzie Scherer
put a hard shot on net; one of the
only shots that the Lady
Mohawks were able to muster in
the first 40 minutes of action.
Colebrook was clearly outsized at almost every position,
but played as physical as they
could despite the lack of whistle
blowing. Both Taylor Siewierski
and Michaella Biron had chances
outside the 18-yard box in the
final 15 minutes of the first half,
but Sunapee’s physicality altered
any chance at an equalizing goal.
Sunapee ended the first half’s
scoring with a series of give-andgo’s through the midfield that
ultimately ended with a Maddie
Austin goal, a shot that CA netminder Brooke Lawson never
stood a chance on.
The second half tilted in Colebrook’s direction through the
opening minutes, as they kept
possession inside Sunapee’s end
for the first three minutes. After
some even back-and-forth action,
Sunapee’s MaryAnn Cousins was
able to lift a ball into the top left
corner of the net to put the Lady
Lakers on top by three.
Colebrook won the majority of
50-50 balls through the midfield
for the following 15 minutes,
although there was never a true
scoring chance. Sunapee capitalized on a mistake up front with
14:23 remaining in the game,
which all but sealed the deal.
The physical play remained
on the field until the final whistle. After a brief CA injury at the
nine-minute mark, the Lady
Mohawk bench was emptied.
Sunapee’s starters were able to
tack on two more goals in the
final six minutes of play.
The loss on Sunday marked
the last game in a green-andwhite uniform for four CA
seniors,
Brooke
Lawson,
Michaella Biron, Makaila Weir,
and Brianna Fogg.
“Our seniors are obviously a
huge loss for us,” said head coach
Katie Parker. “We’re losing a
forward (in Biron) who has the
capability of scoring 20-30 points
a season, and an outstanding
goalie (in Lawson).” Parker
added that Weir’s quickness in
the backfield is going to be hard
to replace, but she’s optimistic
for the future.
“Taylor Siewierski had a great
postseason. We’re expecting that

kind of play out of both her and
Caitlyn Gleason in the midfield
again next year,” she said. “Our
defense is going to be strong if
they stay reliable, and we have
a great core of players returning,
especially in the back line.”
The Colebrook Academy girls
ended their season with a 14-5-1
record, with all four regular season losses coming in the first six
games of the season.
