Inside information

And so , we near the end of 2023 . In this issue we review T & M and , as with all segments of this industry , our experts preview the impact of AI on network and device abilities to diagnose and , even , heal themselves . Interestingly , more than one points out that the hold-back on AI impact is likely to be the lack of data for AI to train on ; data tends not to be consolidated across providers and is often proprietary . Working practices in this area will need to evolve before AI can play its full part . Elsewhere , 2023 hasn ’ t been quite as smooth as many would have hoped given the economic trauma of lockdowns is fading . Inflation hurts cost but , worse , it hurts demand for premium product – the flourishing of FAST channels and AVoD alternatives is evidence of that . The fact that the same macro pressures mean there is less advertising spend all around means the real significance of all this extra ad-driven media is yet to be seen . How can the same advertising cake feed so many more mouths ? Meanwhile premium content is at a premium because of months of writer ’ s and actor ’ s strikes , now settled . As well as better deals , at the heart of the dispute was IP protection from being ripped off by – guess what – AI . In historical terms 2023 may be referenced as the year Rupert Murdoch hung up his corporate spurs – sort of . Not the retiring kind , even in his nineties , Murdoch has been edged out by his own hubris – in the great tradition of all Heroes of Antiquity . The $ 850m + damages paid by Fox News to Dominion over the libel of its voting machines in the 2020 US election , where Fox backed lies about election stealing , were bad enough . But the revelation that Murdoch and his top team knew it was all BS but let it carry on anyway as it was good for the bottom line , was the last straw . There are more libel suits to come plus shareholder claims for recklessly destroying value . It was a kind of sad , but inevitable , end to a career built on taking more risks , and sailing closer to the ethical wind , than any rival dared .
