Inside information

Consistency and quality are important in transmission, as are predicting and spotting mistakes and correcting them as soon as possible.
In broadcast and streaming this means monitoring. Like all other services the direction of travel has been to the cloud and SaaS. Interestingly, as in other areas covered recently, there are more cautionary voices that shifting to the cloud is not always a low-cost solution.
Cloud sells itself heavily on scale flexibility. But the truth is, it is only if you have an invariable demand level and can lock in a deal on service level that cloud is sure to be a saving. Overages are expensive. There are also check points that will always need hardware monitoring for speed of response, or if proprietary techniques are to be maintained.
Given events in the wider broadcast world, the mantra of consistency and quality would be good to adopt. Where was the quality control when an editor decided to clip up a speech to change its emphasis? If it is for a UGC YouTube understandable channel, maybe – and you’ re unlikely to invest your own T & M either.
If you are working for a global media brand, whose brand value is founded on integrity, don’ t do it. But mistakes happen and that’ s what quality control is for – pick up the mistake, put it right. Don’ t save on experienced editors. Like when a streamer’ s T & M fails, like when a retailer’ s cybersecurity fails, you won’ t understand what the ROI on prevention is until it is too late.
