In this issue , we present our annual survey of trends in the test and measurement of digital media . No surprise , the deployment of AI features . But this being the more prosaic and practical part of the provider game , it doesn ’ t indulge of some of the magical AI thinking spotted elsewhere .
AI is , at heart , a pattern-spotting technology . That means it is really good at taking the heavy lifting of out of seeing when things that have happened before are recurring , or when things that haven ’ t been seen before means patterns are deviating . But , by definition , because they haven ’ t happened before , the AI engine can ’ t have learned about them , and therefore has no solution to offer . It is still over to the humans at that point . If they then tell the Internet what solution they found , maybe AI can help next time .
Meanwhile , AI ’ s ‘ really ’ clever sibling , GenAI , is mainly used to mimic humans to provide tried and tested hints and solutions to mere human customers and technicians . Again , it is really about handling the routine problems for which answers are long established . It is more about reducing cost than increasing service level .
Even with AI , the provision of services over diverse networks and to countless device types means constant and comprehensive monitoring is neither practical , nor affordable , for providers . AI-assisted decisions on when , where and how to sample test are important . As is the bench testing of apps , functions and offers before they go into the field – a fault found in the lab is invaluable in saved time and cost . And the same is true of the content , and its format , before it ever enters the distribution ecosystem .
