Wynton Marsalis has been widely honored for his groundbreaking work as a performer , composer , musical director , and educator . He is revered as a leading citizen of the jazz universe , a master and champion of both modern and historic styles . He is the longtime artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center and music director for the acclaimed Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra . He has released 127 recordings ( including 20 of classical repertoire ) and has received nine GRAMMY Awards — in 1983 and again in 1984 he was awarded GRAMMYS in both jazz and classical categories — as well as leading recording awards from other nations , such as the Dutch Edison Award and the French Grand Prix du Disque . He has authored six books , has been given 41 honorary doctorates , has been granted honorary membership in the Royal Academy of Music ( United Kingdom ), was named Chevalier of the Legion of Honor and Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters by France , and was awarded the National Medal of Arts and the National Humanities Medal from the United States .
He has composed more than 600 works ranging from relatively straightforward songs to multi-movement pieces that combine soloists , chorus , and orchestra . Many of his compositions occupy a fusion territory where jazz and classical conventions overlap , and some involve other musical traditions , such as Ghanian drumming and singing . His orchestral output includes concertos spotlighting violin ( 2015 ), tuba ( 2021 ), and trumpet ( 2023 ).
