NVQ
( NATIONAL VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATION )
WHAT ARE THEY ?
A National Vocational Qualification , more commonly known as an NVQ is a work-based qualification and is a great option if you have an idea of what job you might like to do in the future . They involve practical , workrelated tasks to train you for the job you want to do and are available in a broad range of subjects , in almost every sector . They give you the skills for a particular job , which can either lead you straight into work or can be a stepping-stone into further study . An NVQ level 4 & 5 are equivalent to the first and second year of a university degree , and a level 6 is equivalent to a full university degree .
HOW ARE THEY ASSESSED ?
NVQ assessments are practical and are in place to prove you can complete specific work-based tasks required for the job . You ’ ll build up a portfolio to evidence the work you ’ ve done , and you ’ ll also be observed by an assessor who watches you work .
WHERE CAN YOU STUDY ?
You can study for an NVQ in a college , school , or workplace . They don ’ t have to be completed in a specific amount of time , but most people find it takes around 1 year to complete . You can also choose to study for an NVQ while working part-time , which helps to further develop the appropriate skills in the workplace .
HOW AND WHEN DO YOU APPLY ?
You can browse NVQ courses on the National Careers Service website or apply directly to a local college or training provider . Some recruitment agencies such as Reed will advertise NVQ courses on behalf of companies too . Deadlines for application and course fees will vary depending on the course and training provider , however an NVQ is generally a low-cost option .
