Hello Yao Zhang and Liang Guo from NoodleRice Studio and welcome to NotRandomArt. To start with, could you identify a specific artwork that has influenced your artistic practice or has impacted the way you think about your identity as a participant of the visual culture?

We both liked Van Gogh when we were very young, like high school. We even bought the same book about him, although we didnt know each other. We found out about the book after we met. We like his energy, and his life story, you got to do what you got to do.

Liang: starting as a film maker, i was more influence by literature more than visual arts. I was very influneced by The Outsider by Albert Camus. Ever since i have read it, i started to pay a lot of attention to the absurdity that the society and system has put on to individual. It almost become a habit for me, I always doubt and question things that everyone believes, no matter how beautiful it looked or sounded.

Yao: I started very late in art, i was too, more influence by literature and film. I guess at that time in China, it is harder to have access in other art media in cities other than Beijing and Shanghai, there were simply not enough museums and galleries to see it. But books and movie theaters we have access to. I started to know more and got more interested in visual art and art in general was after I started to study in California Institute of the Arts. I was very influnced by Robert Wilson, because I did the summer residency in Watermill in 2013. Right now I am very influneced by James Turrell, and Anish Kapoor. I tend to respond more to minimalism work, no matter it is visual arts, or music, etc.

Would you like to tell us something about your artistical as well as life background? What inspired you to be in this artistical point in your life when you are now?

Liang: I grew up with my grand parents in a different city thousands of miles away from my parents’ home, because at that time, Tianjin, the city my grand parents lived in had better education system. I think that experience influenced me a lot. My grand father was a famous professor in his area, and he was a very

quiet person. He did not speak much in his entire life, while my grand mother liked nagging. I did not have much to talk about with them, so I spent most of my time alone. every summer and winter vacation, i would take trains by myself back to my parents home, which was a 27 hour train ride. My father is a very quiet person, like my grand father, and my mother likes nagging, but both my parents worked in hospital, so i was often alone at home too. And I am very a quiet person, just like my grand father and my father.

I appreciate this interpretation, and think it is close to my own thoughts about my work. I very much believe in the dynamics of oppositions, and I think for example, that to find strength, one has to meet the weakest point. Or to experience wholeness, one has to see the fragments, the details and find the smallest part.

By creating parts of nature, human anatomy, and other fragments, I hope that the viewer, by combing the parts in her own way, can make her own story and find her own sense of coherence.

It is impossible to avoid the topic of body consciousness, embodied emotions and the image of body that we see on your drawings, which stays in real opposition to the images presented in mass media. What are the bodies appearing in your artworks – fragmented, languorous, lethargic…? What inspires you to such representations of the human body?
