Justin Elementary School’s Briley Bufe writes in her journal during class. Briley was Justin’s representative on the district’s new Writers of
the Month program, which honors elementary students for their writing ability or improvement.
This year’s Writers of the Month chose from a variety of genres to feature as
their favorite self-made works. Students such as Roanoke Elementary School
fifth-grader DJ Neal were excited to write about books they enjoyed reading,
for instance.
DJ’s chosen work was about “Woods Runner” by Gary Paulsen, which he said
proved a thrilling read because of its action, adventure and risk-taking.
“I selected this writing piece because I enjoyed reading Gary Paulsen’s books,
and I am excited to share my love for ‘Woods Runner’ with other people,” he
wrote about the novel set during the Revolutionary War.
Justin Elementary School third-grader Briley Bufe chose a short story fiction
work she created, as she wanted to tell a story for her younger sister to enjoy
hearing.
“I think [my story] is a good narrative because I have a sound effect lead that
hooks my reader,” she wrote about her story, which begins with rumbling
noises. “The hook would make the reader want to read all of my story.”
The Writer of the Month program will continue honoring elementary
students next year, with honorees recognized at their school and on the
district website. Community members can follow the celebration of
Northwest ISD youth writers on Twitter through the English Language Arts
team’s account, @NorthwestELA. n
