“ We ’ re looking for partnerships in which the community feels that the hospital belongs to them .”

“ We ’ re looking for partnerships in which the community feels that the hospital belongs to them .”

- Juleun Johnson , D . Min ., vice president of mission and ministry of the AdventHealth Southeast Region
president of finance at AdventHealth Daytona Beach .
Now working out of the AdventHealth Gordon facility , Gotshall has accumulated enough perspective from working at AdventHealth sites throughout the country to recognize the advantages a larger organization brings to the individual communities it serves — particularly those situated in smaller markets .
“ Being part of a bigger system provides stability for those locations ,” he said , noting that one of his goals for AdventHealth Gordon and AdventHealth Murray is to help restore them to pre-pandemic performance levels . “ COVID presented a lot of challenges , but it looks like we may be finding our way out .”
Gotshall ’ s predecessor , Alan Guyton , also understands the value of financial stewardship in managing a nationwide health care network . In addition to serving as CFO for AdventHealth ’ s Southeast Region , Guyton had been performing the same duties for the AdventHealth Gordon and AdventHealth Murray facilities until this year . Recent growth within the region , including the acquisition of AdventHealth Redmond , necessitated a corporate restructuring that would allow Guyton to maintain regional oversight while delegating the hospitallevel financial management to Gotshall .
And although being more of a big-picture , numbers person can be far removed from the hands-on work of healing , Guyton is fully aware of the importance of financial stewardship in fulfilling the AdventHealth mission .
“ You don ’ t have to have patient interaction to make that connection ,” he said . “ We make decisions strategically and operationally day to day to make these hospitals viable so they can serve their communities . Without a bottom line , you can ’ t reinvest the capital to have the right equipment and facilities . I ’ ve seen small facilities that struggle financially , and their communities are ultimately the ones that struggle .”
It ’ s an approach that fits comfortably within the framework of a not-for-profit health care organization . Being able to reinvest in capital projects and expansion ultimately translates into reinvesting in the communities of Northwest Georgia as well as those served by AdventHealth Manchester and AdventHealth Hendersonville .
“ The community is better off because we ’ re here ,” explained Guyton , who has been working for AdventHealth since 2005 . “ We are more than just a service provider . On the clinical side , we want to be the number-one health care facility for our consumers . It ’ s not easy to make a significant bottom line in some of our markets , but we want to continue to grow , because we believe in our product and who we are . Providing care for more individuals is the best outcome for these communities .”
