Baroque composer brothers Alessandro
and Benedetto Marcello lorded prestigiously over 18th-century Venice until
Benedetto died and his family refused
to recognize his widow, a former singing
student and a “commoner.” She sued her
brother-in-law Alessandro for her share
of the estate, and though she lost, the
scandal lived on. More than 100 years
later, their story was appropriately made
into an opera.
