Air filtration is one part of a multi-layered approach to keep passengers and flight crews healthy .
Air is supplied to the cabin from overhead outlets . The volume of cabin air is exchanged EVERY TWO TO THREE MINUTES .
Air flows primarily CEILING TO FLOOR , not front to back , to minimize the spread of contaminants .
Air passes through HIGH EFFICIENCY PARTICULATE AIR ( HEPA ) filters which are 99.9 %+ EFFECTIVE AT TRAPPING VIRUSES AND BACTERIA .

Air is supplied to the cabin on a continuous basis through overhead outlets in the ceiling . Air flows in a circular pattern from top to bottom , exiting the cabin through floor grilles from where it is filtered and mixed with fresh air before passing back into the cabin . The system is designed to minimize the movement of air from front-to-back inside the cabin , limiting the potential spread of any possible contaminants .

Boeing alone cannot solve the threat posed by COVID-19 , and we are working with other stakeholders from across industry to provide end-to-end and standardized protection . This includes working with Airbus through organizations such as the International Coordinating Council of Aerospace Industries Associations , regulatory governing bodies like the International Civil Aviation Organization , airport authorities represented by the Airports Council International , airline associations , university research laboratories and health experts . This cooperation is important domestically and internationally to help ensure a consistent and safe air travel experience .
The recovery of the air travel industry is critical to the overall recovery of the U . S . and global economies but at the end of the day travel during this time is an immensely personal decision . We believe passengers and crew have a low risk of contracting COVID-19 throughout the air travel journey . Expert analysis , our engineering modeling and the resulting data demonstrate that the industry ’ s multi-layered approach is working . As the leader of Boeing ’ s Confident Travel Initiative , I , along with thousands of Boeing employees , am committed to providing passengers and crew with the best information possible , so the most informed decisions can be made and we can all travel confidently .
