We can get wrapped up in the chaos of manufacturing and the urgency that is often associated with short-
ened schedules, tighter tolerances and lack of labor resources to get things done. When the “bottom line” is
at stake, it becomes all hands on deck.
I was helped to readjust this thinking a bit thanks to Pacific Northwest Defense Coalition CEO Sarah Garrison.

Heroes Undercover
Sarah invited me recently to participate in an event held by the 142nd Fighter Wing at the Oregon Air Nation-
al Guard base in Portland. “Employer Appreciation Day” is designed to honor the companies who employ our
National Guard troops, as a special thank you. The program is called ESGR (Employer Support of the Guard
and Reserve). I was truly inspired by the companies and their servicemen and women (and, as you can see in
the pictures I was able to take, I made a check mark on my bucket list as well).
When we are talking on the phone to an engineer or purchasing professional, do we even consider whether
they also serve our nation in the Reserve or National Guard? Do we dwell on the concept that a company may
have to sacrifice the man hours of a much-needed team member, because they support their employee’s
service to our nation?
In Portland, I was in a room full of such organizations — companies proud to be able to support their team
members, who support us. If you are a business owner or HR professional, reach out to your local National
Guard post. You may find a dedicated, hardworking potential employee that uses his or her weekends to
serve what is truly important.
May we always keep our priorities in the right place and recognize that often times the heroes in our lives may
be hidden from view.
