MODIFICATIONS Purchasing NVGs is only one part of ensuring the safety of nighttime op- erations. Aircraft cockpits have to be properly modified for the use of night vision systems. In order to modify aircraft, a FAA supplemental type cer- tificate (STC) must be obtained. ASU partnered with operators worldwide that had numerous types of aircraft in their fleet. By partnering with regu- lating officials from around the globe, ASU has obtained nearly 80 STCs and has modified more than 1,400 aircraft. “We have a trained team of 10 install- ers that fly around the world working with aircraft operators,” said ASU Vice President of Engineering Kip McDer- mott. “They understand the intricate requirements for each aircraft. From the lighting, to the instrumentation, to the drawings, they know every- thing that is required to meet the STC requirements. On any given week we may have eight installers out on a field installation around the world.” JUNE | JULY 2018 ISSUE NO. 3 23
