F or example, Boeing was facing a possible increase in the price of fire insurance for its “high bays” where commercial jetliners undergo final assembly. A study revealed that water from the sprinklers mounted on the ceiling, 90 feet above the factory floor, would actually evaporate before getting near enough to the flames to douse them. The company therefore had two costly alternatives available to it: pay more for insurance or overhaul its fire suppression system. Bauer Cases provided a third possibility — use fire-retardant foam inside its cases and tool trays, which could prevent a fire from taking hold in the first place. “We created this new type of foam ourselves, working with Sealed Air,” said Bauer. “Now, anything that goes into a high bay and stays there for more than 24 hours has to incorporate our special fire-retardant foam.” 58 NORTHWEST AEROSPACE NEWS
