or example, Boeing was facing a possible
increase in the price of fire insurance for
its “high bays” where commercial jetliners
undergo final assembly. A study revealed that
water from the sprinklers mounted on the
ceiling, 90 feet above the factory floor, would
actually evaporate before getting near enough
to the flames to douse them. The company
therefore had two costly alternatives
available to it: pay more for insurance or
overhaul its fire suppression system.
Bauer Cases provided a third possibility —
use fire-retardant foam inside its cases and
tool trays, which could prevent a fire from
taking hold in the first place.
“We created this new type of foam ourselves,
working with Sealed Air,” said Bauer. “Now,
anything that goes into a high bay and
stays there for more than 24 hours has to
incorporate our special fire-retardant foam.”
