Northwest Aerospace News — Issue No. 31 February | March 2023 | Page 91

Five years ago at our annual conference , the state economist for Idaho talked about the looming threat to our economy due to the coming workforce challenges . That topic was under the radar back then -- but we have all seen that issue explode across manufacturing in the last two years . Consequently , the last 18-24 months have seen INWAC making efforts to address both workforce training for existing aerospace personnel , as well as supporting the development of a K12 pipeline for industry .
Part of that pipeline work is to re-ignite interest in technical manufacturing at the K12 and college level . We are working with local school districts on factory tours , trade fairs for K12 , ground school training for high school students , high school apprenticeship tracks for manufacturing , and internships / capstone projects with regional colleges and universities .
We believe that collaboration typifies the perspective for INWAC and our many friends in this region . That mindset is critical to long-term success , as we see increasing competition from other regional clusters in the USA , but also from global competitors in Europe and Asia . Although the Northwest has a long and remarkable history in aerospace , it is more important than ever that we work together to maintain our leadership on the world stage . And we thank our many partners for supporting that goal .
