We need to do more to support the growing Pacific Northwest space industry . Uniquely entrepreneurial , it spans every major sector of the space and satellite value chain . It requires independent , focused efforts to ensure its long-term growth and viability . To do this , we need to bring industry , government , and academia together on four key initiatives : marketing the cluster ; business development ; workforce development ; and entrepreneurial support .
However , we must also continue to support and enhance our world-class aerospace sector holistically . In fact , it ’ s our combined leadership and innovation in aerospace , manufacturing , software , cloud computing , national security and space that gives our region the edge we need to compete globally .
Early in the 20th century , forward-looking aviation pioneers set the stage for the Pacific Northwest to become the global leader in aerospace . We now have a similar opportunity to forge an enduring leadership role in space . Space-based assets and services already underpin our modern economy and benefit all of humanity , and space will be a major growth industry for the 21st century . Let ’ s not miss this moment .
That first Space Shuttle mission was a resounding success . As the Columbia thundered into the Florida sky , and touched down smoothly two days later on the dry lake bed at Edwards Air Force Base , I had no idea what twists and turns my career and life would take . I just knew space would be a part of it . I am grateful to live in a time and a place where I can play even a small role in launching humanity ’ s future in space .
