The demands placed on the students simultaneously grow over the course of the academy . Production quotas are increased , finished products are turned back for quality deficiencies , and students feel the pressure . Larson believes this is a key part of the learning process .

“ Kids rise to the challenges we give them . At first when we add something new to the mix , you can see them sweat bullets , but then they start to come together as a team and as a company . By the end , they come out with a new skill set and a new energy they never had before .”
Students also leave with a $ 1,500 stipend and a more informed sense about their career path , whether or not that ’ s in manufacturing .
“ Our target student is one who expresses an interest in the trades or manufacturing , but isn ’ t sure yet about whether or not they want to pursue that sort of career ,” Larson explained .
“ We don ’ t aim to find students who are 100 percent sure about their career plans and don ’ t expect all students who come , to go down the manufacturing path . If a third of academy participants decide this isn ’ t for them , they ’ ve saved time and money in education and we , as employers , have saved money in making a bad hire . That ’ s still a win for the student and employer .”
After a COVID-forced cancellation in 2020 , the second academy was held over the summer with 20 more students , including nine young women , and eight companies participating . The program has garnered a great deal of local attention and serves as a tool for marketing manufacturing to students . It provides an avenue for companies to invite students into their facilities and has increased conversations and collaboration among employers , educators , and economic development organizations about other workforce issues . As Larson says ,
“ The academy is really a warm up that taps into local resources and creates momentum that becomes a true , community-wide initiative .”
This initiative is one taking firm steps forward to address the workforce challenges that not only individual manufacturers , but regional economies face .
INWAC is a regional alliance of advanced manufacturers , service providers , and affiliates that work together to support the growth and success of the I-90 Aerospace Corridor from Central Washington , across North Idaho , and into Central Montana .
