O ther challenges when taking pictures include the thick, layered, cockpit windows that make it impossible to use zoom lenses, as the windows tend to blur the image. Being therefore restricted to wide-angle lenses, the second challenge comes around the corner — reflections. During the day our white uniform shirts or papers in the cockpit can create havoc; at night it’s mostly the lights in the instruments or from the galley that can ruin a good photo. It was an interesting learning curve with a lot of failures along the way, but now that I’ve mastered these challenges I enjoy sharing the beautiful views from high up in the stratosphere with the rest of the world. All in all, I am glad to see that my photography is being appreciated by so many people around the world and this has given me the incentive to actively pursue it as a second career along with flying. 58 NORTHWEST AEROSPACE NEWS My first coffee table book Cargopilot (2016) has proved to be a major success, and I now plan more books and products, including offering a large selection of my photos as limited-edition, fine art prints through galleries. More of my art can be found on my website www.jpcvanheijst.com which features most of my photography, blogs and webshop.
