Many sUAS of today are now involved with a variety of disciplines. In the case of the USCG project, the ScanEagle is deployed to one of 11 cutter ships in the USCG fleet, to conduct intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) services. Similar work was referenced in the 2009 movie Captain Phillips, where a ScanEagle was deployed to rescue a kidnapped ship captain from pirates. Additionally, the ScanEagle is actively used in disaster response, such as in the Olympic National Park forest fires in 2015; Hurricane Harvey in Texas and the Eagle Creek and Northern California wildfires in 2017; and even in search and rescue missions. In the Bering Sea earlier this year a ScanEagle, on behalf of USCG ef- forts, found a wayward ship and brought in a Medevac helicopter for help. 32 NORTHWEST AEROSPACE NEWS
