Broadly , the term encompasses any innovation that reduces greenhouse gas emissions associated with air travel . Specific examples include Sustainable Aviation Fuels ( SAF ), electric aircraft , and hydrogen fuel cells , to name a few . It also includes structural modifications to existing and future commercial aircraft , like the winglets on a 737 or the transonic truss-braced wing under development by NASA and The Boeing Company .
Washington leaders have been developing aviation climate solutions for over a decade . In 2008 , more than 40 stakeholders convened as Sustainable Aviation Fuels Northwest ( SAFN ) to develop an economically viable aviation biofuels industry in the region .
Aviation biofuels convert discarded feedstock ( like tree limbs left over from logging , municipal solid waste [ MSW ], or used cooking oil ) into a renewable jet fuel . They use the same technical and safety requirements as fossil-based jet fuels , meaning they can be dropped into fuel tanks on the aircraft we fly every day .
