Three components will drive the future mobility evolution: enabling technologies, the right economics for affordable transportation, intermodal convenience and the right regulatory path for safety of travel on the ground and in the air. Growing demand for electric cars, for example, has significantly reduced the price of batteries and introduced batteries that can store more energy, making electric-powered commercial flight more feasible. Similarly, thanks to advances in com- puting power, sensors and AI in the tech sector, it is now possible to effectively and safely manage the integration of unmanned aircraft into manned airspace. 22 NORTHWEST AEROSPACE NEWS The introduction of new technologies into aerospace won’t happen all at once. Proven technologies will be phased in only after they have gone through a robust development process that includes rigorous testing. Most importantly, partnering with regulators and technology enablers will be cru- cial for creating a new transportation ecosystem where autonomous and piloted air vehicles safely coexist. As lines between industries blur, Boeing is partnering to build the future of aerospace and integrating new technologies safely and reliably. Meeting the evolving transportation needs of a rapidly chang- ing global society requires creative thinking, problem solving and innovation. With over 100 years in the aviation industry Boeing is leveraging our experience and collaborating with our partners and regulators to enable critically-needed airspace with safety as our top priority.
