Airspeed , Altitude , and Brains

By Staci P . Carter

If Doug Stewart hadn ’ t made a career out of running multiple businesses , we would likely find him coaching a sports team . “ Running a business is exactly like coaching , in my opinion ,” says Stewart , CEO of the Color Craft Group . “ Both require you to develop a team , set a strategy that leverages your strengths , and be consistent in your approach and identity .” When his four kids were little , he got more than a taste of coaching . Though they are now all grown and living scattered across the country ( ranging from nearby Seattle to Chicago and Washington D . C .), Stewart recalls that time fondly . “ I coached all four of my kids in just about every sport . Our family loves to compete — from basketball , soccer , and rowing crew to mock trials — you name it .”

Stewart likes to approach all things in life with a mental model based on the truths found in an old Air Force adage that says , “’ Airspeed , altitude and brains .’ Two of those elements are always needed to successfully complete the flight . If you have all three you are in great shape .” Just as altitude , airspeed , and brains are the three vital elements to flying , they hold just as true in business and family matters .
