EDITORS NOTE
FROM THE EdITORS DESK
F
inally, it’s the time of the year when most of us have the opportunity to take a
break from our busy schedules, reflect back on the past year and spend
some much needed time with our families and love ones.
Personally speaking, December months are synonyms with words
such as family, reflection, purpose, goals and growth. Many
may agree that between spending time with our loved ones
and friends we have to make some time for ourselves,
which I like to call - ‘my time”. However, because it’s
the end of the year we sacrifice a portion of our much
deserved “my time” to a process or activity, which
consist of truthfulness and reality. This process I
like to call - ‘self-audit”. (Self-audit – a process
that takes place normally once a year when
an individual reflects back over the past 12
months.
Yes – we have been here before, exactly one
year ago we completed the same process
and then decided to implement changes and
to make different choices which ultimately
would ensure that we reach our goals. This
process is commonly known as New Year’s resolutions. I wonder how many individuals
reached their goals that were set out 12 months ago.

Many people might not agree with me – but attached to the words ‘new year’s resolution
is a stigma of failure. I ask myself why that is. Why do so many people wait till the
end of the year to make these decisions, keeping in mind these are personally important
decisions that can be life changing. Secondly I ask myself the question, why do most
New Year’s resolutions fail within the first 30 days. Who or what can be blamed for such
commonly failed results? Do we blame ourselves for setting our goals to a level that’s in
fact humanly impossible to achieve or maybe we set goals we in reality cannot achieve
because we have never realistically evaluated what we need to sacrifice or how we need to
change our behaviours, mindsets and actions in order to achieve these goals. Just a thought .
Winning isn’t easy – that’s why we all cannot be winners. But all winners can testify and agree
to one rule, and that is that to become a winner you have to sacrifice something, or do without.
The correct route is most likely the more difficult path. Nobody said it better than Winston Churchill:
”If you’re going through hell, keep going.” Choose your goals wisely.
